Passage
Plastic waste is everywhere. Every day, an astonishing amount of plastic waste enough to fill 2,000 garbage trucks dumped into the ocean. Plastic litter can be found at the bottom of the ocean and on top of Mount Everest. Surprisingly, plastic waste has now turned on the backs of hermit crabs!
Hermit crabs are tiny animals with soft, curly bodies leave them vulnerable to predators. their tails are fragile, they must constantly look for empty shells to protect from hungry birds and fishes. Studies show 10 out of 16 land species been observed wearing plastic waste, such as bottle caps, and broken lightbulbs.
Scientists believe this unusual behaviour may be due to the declining population of sea snails, resulting fewer natural shells for the crabs. It is also possible that crabs choose plastic materials traditional shells because they are lighter in weight and easier to carry.
While scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife and ecosystems, it is still unclear hermit crabs are directly endangered by this behaviour. This shows that plastic waste can affect even small animals.
