How to Read Exam Questions Carefully: Keywords Students Often Miss

Find the task first

Before working, identify the action the question requires. Are you being asked to state, explain, compare, calculate, choose, infer or justify? Different tasks require different kinds of answers.

Notice negative wording

Words such as NOT, except, least and incorrect reverse the usual direction of a question. Mark them so they remain visible while you consider the answer.

Separate information from instruction

A question may contain background details, data and the actual task. Ask which information affects the answer and what final form is required.

Respect conditions

Phrases such as “using the information above”, “give two reasons”, “to the nearest whole number” or “according to the passage” constrain a valid answer. Missing the condition can turn good knowledge into a wrong response.

Check command words in context

Exam boards and subjects can use command words differently. Learn the expectations used by your own syllabus and marking guidance rather than relying on a universal definition.

Finish by rereading the task

After answering, look back at the exact question. Check that your response answers every part and uses the requested format, unit or number of points.
